NESTS – Interreg Greece / Italy

Le Riserve Naturali Regionali della Costa Orientale di Taranto sono ente capofila del progetto NESTS – “Strengthen the specialist skills of the Natura 2000 sites management bodies to reach the European Biodiversity Strategy 2030 targets”, finanziato dal Programma Interreg VI-A Grecia–Italia 2021–2027. Attraverso il coordinamento delle attività e il lavoro congiunto con i partner, il progetto mira a costruire una cooperazione più solida tra Italia e Grecia per la tutela e la valorizzazione della biodiversità.

Il progetto NESTS, in linea con la Strategia Europea per la Biodiversità 2030, mira a rafforzare la gestione cooperativa dei siti Natura 2000 nell’area del programma Grecia–Italia. Il progetto riconosce la necessità di migliorare la gestione di questi siti, molti dei quali sono amministrati da piccole autorità locali che spesso dispongono di risorse economiche limitate e personale non specializzato, rendendo difficile il raggiungimento degli obiettivi europei di conservazione.

Per conseguire tali risultati, NESTS prevede attività di formazione rivolte a stakeholder e decisori politici al fine di migliorare la governance dei siti Natura 2000, promuovere il networking tra enti gestori e creare un Osservatorio Permanente sulla Biodiversità, una piattaforma transfrontaliera per il monitoraggio continuo, la valutazione e la condivisione dei dati. Questa struttura garantirà la comparabilità delle informazioni e l’allineamento agli standard Natura 2000, favorendo un approccio coerente e replicabile alla gestione della biodiversità.

Inoltre, il progetto realizzerà un database di buone pratiche e misure di conservazione da condividere in tutta l’area di programma, mentre azioni pilota saranno implementate in siti selezionati per testare soluzioni pratiche e sviluppare linee guida trasferibili ad altri enti gestori. Campagne di sensibilizzazione e iniziative partecipative rafforzeranno il coinvolgimento locale e la cooperazione, promuovendo una governance della biodiversità più inclusiva e resiliente.

Le Riserve Naturali Regionali della Costa Orientale di Taranto, in qualità di capofila, avranno un ruolo centrale nel monitoraggio e coordinamento delle attività del progetto. In collaborazione con i partner, condurranno analisi dei territori coinvolti, realizzeranno azioni pilota dedicate alla protezione degli ecosistemi nelle aree individuate e nei siti dei partner, e organizzeranno attività di formazione rivolte ai manager dei parchi e dei siti Natura 2000. Queste attività saranno accompagnate da momenti di cooperazione transfrontaliera, finalizzati a rafforzare le competenze e a promuovere un modello comune di gestione sostenibile della biodiversità tra Italia e Grecia.

The Regional Natural Reserves of the Eastern Coast of Taranto are the lead beneficiary of the NESTS project – “Strengthen the specialist skills of the Natura 2000 sites management bodies to reach the European Biodiversity Strategy 2030 targets”, funded by the Interreg VI-A Greece–Italy 2021–2027 Programme. Through coordinated activities and joint work with its partners, the project aims to build stronger cooperation between Italy and Greece for the protection and enhancement of biodiversity.
The NESTS project, in line with the European Biodiversity Strategy 2030, aims to strengthen cooperative management of Natura 2000 sites in the Greece–Italy programme area. The project recognises the need to improve the management of these sites, many of which are overseen by small local authorities that often have limited financial resources and non-specialised staff, making it difficult to achieve the European conservation targets.
To achieve these objectives, NESTS includes training activities for stakeholders and policy-makers to improve Natura 2000 governance, promote networking among managing authorities, and establish a Permanent Biodiversity Observatory, a cross-border platform for continuous monitoring, assessment, and data sharing. This structure will ensure comparability of information and alignment with Natura 2000 standards, supporting a coherent and replicable approach to biodiversity management.
Additionally, the project will create a database of best practices and conservation measures to be shared across the programme area, while pilot actions will be implemented in selected sites to test practical solutions and develop guidelines that can be transferred to other managing bodies. Awareness-raising campaigns and participatory initiatives will strengthen local engagement and cooperation, promoting more inclusive and resilient biodiversity governance.
As lead partner, the Regional Natural Reserves of the Eastern Coast of Taranto will play a central role in monitoring and coordinating project activities. Together with partners, they will carry out territorial analyses, implement pilot actions dedicated to protecting ecosystems in the targeted areas and partner sites, and organise training activities for park managers and Natura 2000 site managers. These activities will be complemented by cross-border cooperation initiatives aimed at strengthening skills and promoting a shared model of sustainable biodiversity management between Italy and Greece.
